Historically, Tal-y-bont has close associations with lead and silver mining and with the woollen mills that once dominated the local economy.

Work on the construction of the wind farm began in the winter of 1997 and it was completed in the spring of 1998. The turbines were installed by NEGM Energy A/S overseen by RWE npower renewables (NWP). The site was operated under a warranty operation and maintenance agreement until August 2012 before switching to Npower Renewables’ in-house technical department.

Mynydd Gorddu Wind Farm has one of the most consistent outputs in the country. Its 19 turbines are of two different types, rated at 550kW and 600kW respectively. They have the capacity to generate 10.8 megawatts of power – enough to supply 8,585 homes* with electricity.

Benefiting local communities

Mynydd Gorddu Wind Farm’s community benefit fund has helped a wide variety of local groups and organisations. Recent projects have included the provision of an equipment store for Tal-y-bont District Youth Football Club, replacing windows at Rhydypennau School to save on heating costs and redecorating the village hall at Penrhyn-coch.
