The site was previously one of the largest open-cast mines in the UK and is now earmarked for an ambitious redevelopment. Westfield lies approximately 3.62 km west south west of Glenrothes and 13.40 km north east of Dunfermline.
The wind farm was constructed by Infinis with works beginning in August 2012 and completing in April 2013. The wind farm is administered from a control building located within the site boundary. Westfield’s 4 turbines are rated at 2.5MW and the site has an installed capacity of 10MW, generating enough energy to power 7,949 homes*.
Benefiting local communities
Westfield Wind Farm’s community funds benefit projects in the villages of Benarty, Cardenden and Kinglassie. Recent examples of projects that have been supported include the purchase of crockery, cutlery and accoutrements for use by community groups at events in Kinglassie’s Mitchell Hall, a contribution to the cost of employing a qualified children’s counsellor for Fife Women’s Group and support for Bowhill Retirement Group’s summer trip to Callander.
Other projects have included supporting Bowhill Bowling Club’s Family Fun Day and other efforts to encourage younger members to join the Club, contributing to the cost of a flat screen TV and DVDs to assist with teaching dances at Corrie Tea Dance and helping with the cost of the 2018 community firework celebration organised by Cardenden and Kinglassie Bonfire and Fireworks Committee.
