Our Carbon Emission Targets
If the world is to avert the worst effects of climate change, every business needs to take real, measurable action to cut carbon emissions. At Ventient we’re taking a lead by setting targets grounded in climate science.
In 2020 we started our journey towards net zero by calculating our carbon footprint based on the 2019 benchmark year.
Our areas of focus:
- Reducing Scope 1 emissions targeting our operational transport
- Assessing Scope 3 emissions through collaboration with our supply chain
- Involving our stakeholders in our sustainability journey with initiatives to raise awareness of climate change
We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions by at least 46% by 2030 and the earlier we achieve our 46% of emissions reduction, the sooner we can reach our final goal of NET ZERO. Each year we review our performance against the target aiming to accelerate as much as possible the achievement of NET ZERO.
A lot has changed since 2019; the growth of our portfolio and our team naturally increased our carbon footprint. However, the benchmark report has provided us with fundamental insights to build our path toward net zero.
It showed that almost 90% of the total emissions we produce are generated by the energy we consume (Scope 2 emissions), specifically at our sites. Therefore, in 2021 we decided to focus on entering all our wind farms into green tariffs to ensure that they were all supplied by renewable energy and to bring their emissions down to zero.
As a result we’ve achieved a 26% reduction in Scope 2 emissions between 2019 and 2021. Since January 2022 our remaining wind farms in Germany are supplied by renewable energy delivering a total Scope 2 emissions reduction of 87%.
