People

We care deeply about our people, the communities we work in and our stakeholders.

Wellbeing, inclusive work practices and collaboration are at the heart of what we do, and DEI is in our DNA. It provides an anchor for our long-term business strategy and permeates through our day to day culture, ensuring people of all backgrounds can thrive.

Crucially, we are constantly re-evaluating and analysing what we do through transparent feedback to ensure we are always listening, improving and enhancing our culture and how we work.

Our approach to DEI starts with our board and flows through the entire business. We are proud of the way we work, we love our strong recognition and reward culture. We listen and we want a prime People Strategy, as people are at the top of our agenda.

Our people can carve out successful careers supported by our rich learning and development programmes, open doors policies, and opportunities across the company.

This means we can recruit the best talent, at the top of their field. In return we expect high performance and commitment. It’s the Ventient Way.

What's the meaning of DEI?

DIVERSITY ON THE MENU

At Ventient we have the privilege to be part of a multicultural company that welcomes people from different countries, backgrounds and cultures.

To celebrate World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on 21 May, we share with everyone a little gift; a recipes book collecting all those tasty dishes that belong to our team’s diverse cultural heritage.

Food is something that brings us together with family and friends. It speaks to our senses and brain and tells many stories about our country, personal background and traditions. It brings us joy and a natural feeling of sharing.

We would like to invite you on a tasty tour through our diversity, exploring the flavours and traditions of the #CulturesOfVentient.

Air Ambulance

In 2021 we were delighted to support the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust’s project Saving Future Lives: Every Minute Matters with a donation from our UK Community Benefit Funding Scheme.

As a public funded charity, the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust relies on the support from people and organisations to fund every lifesaving mission. The rural nature of Cornwall makes an air ambulance service even more crucial in treating the most critically ill patients in the region and our local asset, Bears Down Windfarm, was keen to support such an essential service in its community.

Commenting on the donation, Ventient Asset Manager, Christian Davies said: “Cornwall Air Ambulance is called to over a 1000 seriously ill or injured people a year in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. When every minute counts, its service can be the difference between life and death. As a charity, they rely on public donations to ensure this service remains at the heart of the community and we at Ventient and the Bears Down Windfarm are delighted we can offer financial support”.

A sense of belonging

We’re building a business that’s diverse, equitable and inclusive.

We’re committed to making Ventient an inclusive company, where people of all backgrounds and experiences can thrive and fulfil their ambitions. To track our progress, we’ve launched an annual employee survey.

The results of the first study in 2021 were generally positive.
83% of employees feel included and respected in Ventient. 91% feel a sense of belonging in the company, agreeing that they are comfortable being themselves at work and feel recognised for their accomplishments.

Our aim is to keep building a truly diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.

Resilient communities

During the pandemic, our community funds have been channelled to those most in need.

Communities everywhere have stepped up to help their most vulnerable people cope with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. We’re proud to have supported our local communities in these efforts during 2020 and 2021.

In Halkirk in Caithness, for example, our Community Benefit Fund distributes money received from the local communities of our Causeymire wind farm. During lockdowns, the fund supported a range of local resilience programmes such as a meal delivery and shopping service to elderly and vulnerable residents, supported by volunteers and local businesses. Children of all ages were also provided with free lunches, again delivered by volunteers.

Community policing

Early in 2021, we contributed to raising funds to purchase quad bikes for The Community Policing Team covering Lesmahagow and Larkhall areas.

The Community Policing Team needed a special type of vehicle that could allow them to tackle some ongoing safety issues caused by operators on off-road vehicles on private land.

“We are already starting to see the benefits of these bikes with several ASB tickets/warnings having been issued. The Community Policing Team would like to thank the various private landowners and wind turbine operators, who raised funds for the bikes. It’s a huge step forward in tackling and preventing anti-social behaviour on private land, giving local reassurance and maintaining our focus on keeping people safe”.

Stronger communities

Safety Report Scheme
For us safety is a duty towards people. We are committed to create a healthy and safe environment for our people, our partners and our communities. That’s why we have created the Safety Report Scheme. Our team and partners are called to consistently and carefully assess health and safety throughout all their operations. Any detection of a health and safety improvement need is reported back. Each report becomes a donation to our chosen charities.

Community Benefit Fund
In 2019 we contributed over £1.7m to local initiatives. The funds helped to improve services and facilities for people in 35 local communities, and contributed to environmental, cultural and educational activities.

Local Support
During the covid-19 pandemic, we also supported local food banks with donations for vulnerable people and those who were self-isolating.

‘I am bowled over. I haven’t been able to get a supermarket delivery slot so I am really grateful.’
