Its three turbines have an installed capacity of 7.5MW and they’re located on land that’s currently used for pastoral farming – although the local area was historically associated with coal and clay mining.
With a summit peaking at 349m, Blackstone Edge is ideally situated to capture the winds that blow across the Pennines, and the three turbines generate enough electricity to power an estimated 5,961 homes*.
Construction at Blackstone Edge Wind Farm began in July 2012 and the development took 9 months to complete.
Benefiting local communities
Other than the town of Penistone (pop 22,909), Blackstone Edge Wind Farm is located close to the villages of Millhouse Green (Pop. 1,234), Thurlestone (pop 1,886) and Ingbirchworth (pop 460). The wind farm’s community development fund (which is co-ordinated by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation) has already made significant contributions to local groups including providing equipment and volunteer training at Penistone Community Radio and Kayaking and Canoeing equipment for Penistone Scout Group.
The fund also provided furniture and equipment for Springvale Community School, allowing the school to create a safe and inspiring new library.
