The wind farm covers a site of around 600hectares and is 400m above sea level. At the time of its construction in 1996, it was the biggest onshore wind farm in Europe, paving the way for further large-scale wind farm developments.
Built at a cost of approximately £26M, Carno Wind Farm has 56 turbines rated at 600kW. This gives the site the capacity to generate 33.6 megawatts of power – enough to supply 29,152 homes* with electricity.
Benefiting local communities
Carno Wind Farm’s community benefit fund has helped a wide variety of local groups and organisations. Recent projects have included the purchase of road safety features to benefit a number of local communities, purchasing a 3D printer that’s used by a youth group, improving local footpaths and buying new furniture for Ysgol Llanbynmair Primary School.
The fund has also made donations to the Trefeglwys Eisteddfod music and arts competition and helped make improvements to a community recycling area in Trefeglwys.
